Cycling survey 2007

In 2001 less than 2% of journeys in East Sussex were made by bike. Yet cycling is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing, beats congestion, saves time parking, and helps the planet.

We wanted to find out more about how we could increase the numbers of people cycling in East Sussex, especially for journeys to work and other utility trips. Our online survey ran for a month in October-November 2007.

Over 700 responses showed clearly that you do want to cycle more. Many would do so if roads were safer and there were more cycle ways. The great majority of you said that there is much we could do to help, and that cycling is far from becoming a lost cause in the UK.

Reports and recommendations

The final report provides a realistic response on the question of timescales and resources needed to make any improvements to encourage more cycling. Its recommendations include:

  • making sure that cycling schemes are assessed equally against other kinds of transport projects when spending transport resources in the county
  • encouraging transport planners and road designers to incorporate cycling schemes into designs wherever feasible
  • encouraging more cycle training in schools
  • working better with the train companies to improve cycle storage at stations, and asking Southern to reconsider their cycle ban on certain rush hour train services.

The full report was made to Cabinet on 29 January 2008, and is available to download below. The Cabinet meeting can be watched online. Find out how to view videos of council meetings.

You can also download a summary of the responses to the questionnaire.
