Navigating our website
We have tried to make navigating around the site as easy as possible, but you might find the suggestions below useful.
Please let us know if you have any problems. You can contact us using the 'Web Team' option in the comments form. This form can be reached from every page through the 'Contact us' link at the top left.
Moving around the site
You can move to different pages by using main categories on the menu bar on the left of each page. Move your cursor over the buttons and you will notice the button will be highlighted. You can then click your mouse to go to the page containing the information.
Keyboard shortcuts – we have set up keyboard shortcuts to help users navigate the site. For example, pressing 'Alt' and 1 will return you to the home page. For more details visit our Shortcut keys page.
The ‘breadcrumb trail’ at the top of the page shows where you are within each section of the site. You can click on the links within the trail to move backwards within sections.
You can return to the home page of the site by clicking on the Council logo at any time, or on ‘Home’ in the breadcrumb trail.
On each page in the right hand column you may find:
- Related pages – provides links to other, similar content within the Council website.
- Related documents – downloadable documents relevant to the current page. Documents will open in a new window.
- On other websites – links to further information on external websites, often going direct to a relevant page .
Opening a link in a new window or tab
Opening links in a new window or tab lets you explore links on our site without losing your current page. This saves having to use the back button many times to return to your starting point.
You can open links in a new window by holding down 'Shift', or in a new tab by holding down 'Control' as you click the link. Alternatively, right-click a link (Mac users ‘Apple-click') and select ‘open in new window’ or ‘open in new tab’.
Moving around a page
The ‘backspace’ key on your keyboard acts in the same way as the ‘back arrow’ icon on your toolbar, unless you are in a text entry box. (Pressing 'Alt' and 'left arrow' works every time.)
Every page has a ‘back to top’ link in the bottom right corner of the page, or press the ‘Home’ key on your keyboard.
At the top of some pages you will find links to other pages that explore the subject in more depth.
