Using our interactive maps

Planning applications

See our separate help page for maps of planning application boundaries when using the Planning Register.

Zoom in or out

You can zoom in either by clicking on the area of interest on the map itself, or by using the zoom buttons on the top right of the map screen.

If the map stops zooming or the zoom buttons are greyed out, you are at maximum or minimum magnification.

Panning left or right, up or down

You can ‘steer’ the map screen across the landscape by clicking on the small arrowed buttons around the map area at each corner and midsection.

Finding the details you need

Once you have identified a feature of interest, simply click on it to see more information. You may also see links or buttons that open these text pages. These pages of text will often include further contact details if you still have unanswered questions.

You can explore further related features by returning to an earlier start point with your back button, or links that take you ‘back to results’, ‘back to map’ or ‘back to search’.

Problems using our maps?

Alternatives to maps

If for any reason you prefer to find the information you need by other routes, you don’t need to use our maps.

Each map on this site has an alternative – for example, a downloadable list of roadworks, an A-Z list of councillors and libraries, or a form that lets you search by postcode (such as for schools or planning applications).

Slow or inaccessible maps

We’ve done our best to keep things as fast as possible, but please be aware that some larger map images may take longer to load over a non-broadband connection. Factors outside our control can also cause pages to load slowly at times.

The site is normally updated every weekday between 4–5pm. This can sometimes cause problems with applications such as:

Clickable maps

  • Find a library
  • Search for schools
  • Map of Children’s centres

Interactive maps

  • Roadworks
  • Walks
  • Planning Register

Problems might also occur with ‘Find this address’ buttons in online forms, and the ‘See a map of this address’ links in the A-Z.
